Criminal Injuries Compensation & Appeals
If you have been the blameless victim of a violent crime or abuse then you may be able to claim compensation through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA), although any compensation paid out by CICA may be lower than you may have achieved by pursuing your assailant or abuser directly.
CICA are a government run organisation set up to help “blameless victims of crime”. However, if you have an unspent criminal conviction they may only offer a reduced award or no award at all.
The limitation period in which to apply to CICA for compensation is two years from the date of the incident or the date of conviction.
There are instances when CICA reject an application for compensation but will offer you the opportunity to appeal. We may be able to help you with your appeal if your claim was rejected for any of the following reasons:-
- The 2 year limitation period has expired
- You have an unspent criminal conviction
- You did not submit your Notice of Appeal by the specified deadline.
